According to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), the highest temperature of the day, 39.5 degrees, was measured in Maastricht, a city in the southern province of Limburg. In the coastal province of Zeeland, temperatures rose to 39.1 degrees. The KNMI said in a press release on Tuesday that "of course, something like this doesn't happen every year, but the chance of record-shattering temperatures increases as the earth warms up faster."
